NWCI stands alongside survivors of symphysiotomy in their search for truth and justice

Published: Friday, November 07, 2014

National Women’s Council of Ireland today added their voice of support for Survivors of Symphysiotomy in their search for redress and justice.

The government this morning announced an unjust redress scheme for symphysiotomy survivors

The time limits being enforced under the scheme are unprecedented, unreasonable and unworkable. Women must submit their applications within 20 days making it impossible to seek independent advice and to make a considered decision. This time limitation must be lifted.

Survivors of Symphysiotomy have argued that the scheme announced this morning without consultation, is an attempt to delay the litigation cases currently before the High Court. As the UN Human Rights Committee indicated, the scheme as announced this morning offers no accountability. Survivors of symphysiotomy are being denied both truth and justice.

National Women’s Council of Ireland call on the government to adequately compensate survivors of this inhumane practice, and show a commitment to establishing the truth behind these destructive and involuntary surgeries.
