#NWCISoapBox: a chance for women to say it as it is.

Published: Friday, March 07, 2014

This International Women’s Day, Saturday the 8th of March, National Women’s Council  of Ireland intend to replicate the fire and passion of earlier feminists with a pop up Soap Box in O’Connell Street, Dublin. To date women from all walks of life including comedian Tara Flynn, feminist campaigner Ailbhe Smyth, Sabina Higgins, wife of President Higgins, journalists, activists, commentators and politicians from across the political spectrum have registered to take part. Women and men will speak on topics such as marriage equality, mental health, reproductive rights, rural women living in isolation, violence against women and childcare.

“Many of the early feminists began their involvement in political campaigning by speaking out about equality issues on a soapbox on a city centre street. These are the women that National Women’s Council of Ireland draws its inspiration from.  NWCI  have invited everyone to stand in solidarity with women from all over the country who are prepared to stand up for what truly matters to women. While not everyone will be able to attend in person standing on our especially designed NWCI soap box, many more will follow the conversation on  #NWCISoapBox. By midnight on International Women’s Day, thousands of Irish women from all walks of life will have had their voice heard.”

The Soapbox, which will be fully managed, will be opposite the GPO – an iconic landmark in Ireland’s history, from 12.00 to 4.00 on Saturday, March the 8th – International Women’s Day. For those 4 hours the NWCI will live tweet what women are saying. A range of women, both young and older, from Ireland’s artistic, political, musical and journalistic community are going to take part.
