Safe Ireland and Rape Crisis Network attend UN Commission on the Status of Women

Published: Thursday, March 14, 2013

The two National Networks on Violence Against Women, Safe Ireland and Rape Crisis Network Ireland, who represent over 55 frontline domestic and sexual violence services, attended the UN Commission on the Status of Women as part of the Irish delegation. The Irish delegation was led by Minister Kathleen Lynch.

As the 57th Commission focused on the elimination and prevention of VAW and Girls in the week of March 3rd – 8th this was an ideal opportunity for the organisations to bring their knowledge and best practice to this level but also to learn and develop their practice and thinking in line with the UN shift towards primary prevention.

The 57th Commission followed its usual format, with plenary sessions, panel discussions and a myriad of 'side events' which afforded opportunities to present and learn good practice.

At a side event, Fiona Neary, RCNI Director, particiapted in a panel regarding sexual violence and older women, at which she presented information derived from the internationally recognised and groundbreaking RCNI database. At an Ireland/Australia side event, RCNI's Clíona Saidléar presented a paper on the use of new technologies and social media towards ending sexual violence in Ireland.

Safe Ireland and RCNI continue their work to ensure the Irish violence against women sector is supported at all levels and that we maximise our contribution to ending violence against women both at home and internationally.
