Thanks to all our supporters at the end of a significant 2013!

Published: Monday, December 16, 2013

As we come to the end of 2013 we wanted to share with you some of successes for women that have been achieved by NWCI and all of our supporters in our campaign for women's equality.

2013 has been a significant year for women; the first piece of legislation was passed to enable women to have an abortion where their lives were at risk.  A historic apology was given by an Taoiseach Enda Kenny to the women survivors of the Magdalene laundries and their families.  An overwhelming majority of the Constitutional Convention members voted to accept recommendations made by the National Women's Council of Ireland to amend article 41.2 of the Constitution which refers to women's role being in the home.

In 2013 with your support we continued to lobby for increased representation of women across all sectors of society and we are finally seeing significant efforts by political parties to meet the quota legislation in the next general election. We have consistently been examining the impact of the recession and austerity on women and we have lobbied to keep women out of poverty and to remain in employment. As always we have been analysing and making representations to Government to ensure that policy is not gender blind and includes the needs, concerns and aspirations of women.

So we approach 2014 with enthusiasm and ambition to continue our work to pave a brighter future for women and girls. Our recent Christmas wish campaign has highlighted many areas our supporters are interested in, including ending violence against women and rape culture, seeing a society emerge that embraces women in all shapes and sizes and teaches young women in particular that they are beautiful and do not have to conform to unrealistic measures created in the media, increasing the number of women in leadership so we have better representation, improving healthcare to meet women’s needs, repealing the 8th amendment so as to introduce safe and legal abortion and ultimately to see more people standing up and seeking an equal Ireland.

It is our promise and commitment to seek these changes and work hard on your behalf. To make this more possible, we ask that you continue to support our work. Our strength lies in our members and donors, as without you all our work would not be possible. If you are interested in becoming an individual member please check it out here. If you would like to make a donation to our organisation, we would be extremely grateful and promise you that your contribution goes directly to our work. Donations can be made here.

NWCI would like to thank all of our members, donors, volunteers and supporters who have contributed to our organisation over the years. Without their involvement, we wouldn’t have achieved all we have so far, so a massive thank you to all of them.

Finally, may we wish you and yours a wonderful Christmas and New Year.
