Meeting to discuss the possibilities and opportunities for political change and reform in Clare a group of intelligent, passionate and enlightened women could not ignore the lack of female candidates on the ballot. This, while not unusual was none the less disappointing.
As discussion rounded on this issue it was felt that inaction was no longer a solution. A candidate stepped forward to change one small thing, joined shortly by two others, and an opportunity was born.
Stepping out of line and following beliefs is not easy, but no change is. It is through engagement with the system as it stands and widening the terms of debate that change will occur. Change is the word which opens our hearts and minds to other possibilities. It's not easy to change, but we felt that we could draw back the curtain on the barriers facing those who wish to engage with politics.
We hope through our actions we will encourage debate, widen the scope and tone of the conversation about political reform and representation and ultimately that we can demonstrate that this is not just about women; it's about balance in society. Something that involves all voices, all backgrounds, and all skill sets.

The three women candidates are Ann Cronin, Madeline McAleer & Sarah Ferrigan. Support from groups active within the local community ensured their names were part of the ballot in the 2011 General Election. Within thirty six hours the necessary paper work was in place. Regardless of the outcome of this election some women in Clare have made their stand and have stated clearly to the electorate and the political parties: "we are not invisible, we will not be ignored".
This is a positive move, lead by love, hope and courage. It allows us to look through the door not the keyhole at political life and we will continue to act to facilitate all voices being part of Irish politics.
