The Struggle Against The Cuts: WHY EQUALITY MATTERS
6 October 2010
At this launch meeting of the Network For Solidarity we are proud to host Richard Wilkinson, joint author of The Spirit Level. Richard is a researcher in social inequalities in health and the social determinants of health. He is Professor Emeritus of social epidemiology at the University of Nottingham. He is also Honorary Professor at University College London. He is best known for his 2009 book (with Kate Pickett) The Spirit Level, in which he argues that more equal societies in terms of income have better health outcomes than ones in which the gap between richest and poorest parts society is greater.
"We know the problem of cuts comes from the rich, from the bankers, from the mistakes they made - and we know who's paying for it.
"We're totally unequal to it. While thinking what little bits we can improve around the edges, we must not forget the overall picture. It demands a much bigger response to the obscenity of what we are having to talk about - the kind of services that have to be cut to keep paying bonuses to these people.
"But this won't be changed, fundamentally, until there is a massive social and political movement addressing this problem." Richard Wilkinson, September 2010
