Date for your Diary - civil society engagement with the CEDAW process

Published: Thursday, June 30, 2016

The UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is an international human rights treaty that focuses on the development and advancement of women's rights  (More information here).

In ratifying CEDAW, Ireland committed to taking concrete steps to improve the status of women in Irish society, for the purpose of guaranteeing them the same rights as men. As evidence of these ongoing efforts, Ireland must submit reports periodically to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (the CEDAW Committee), detailing the measures it has taken to comply with its obligations.

Our next review by the CEDAW Committee is getting closer – it happens in early 2017. As  part of this process the State will be compiling responses to a list of issues identified by the CEDAW Committee.

As part of this process the Equality Division of the Department of Justice and Equality will be hosting a working consultation with civil society on 19 July 2016, 10 am at the Department, 51 St. Stephen's Green, with a view to submitting the Report  by the deadline of 12 September 2016. If you wish to attend, please email Layla de Cogan Chin at LRdeCoganChin@justice.ie to register.  Places are limited and they are accepting registrations on a first-come-first-served basis.

This is an important opportunity to call the Committee’s attention to the progress and failings made in the realisation of rights for all women in Ireland since the last review in 2005.
