Published: Thursday, April 28, 2016

The National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) congratulates Alice Mary Higgins on her election to Seanad Éireann. Alice Mary is currently Policy and Campaigns Officer with NWCI and took leave to campaign in the NUI Seanad election.

Orla O’Connor, Director, NWCI said,
“We are delighted that Alice Mary Higgins, a feminist and campaigner for women’s equality and social justice has been elected to Seanad Eireann. Alice Mary has always shown great leadership, vision and upmost commitment to principles of equality and human rights and these qualities will make her a powerful advocate in our Oireachtas.”

“Alice-Mary will be the first woman to be elected to the NUI panel since Gemma Hussey in 1981. In our #FemGen campaign for the General Election we encouraged more women to become involved in politics, and also for women and men to run on an equality agenda. It is great to see that Alice Mary will be joined by other strong female Senators with a clear commitment to women’s equality, including Lynn Ruane and Ivana Bacik.
