Seminar: Women Seeking Justice - Prosecution for Violence Against Women
Friday, December 08, 2017
Join us for a seminar taking place as part of the annual 16 Days of Action Opposing Violence Against Women campaign, with the Irish Observatory on Violence Against Women, convened by NWCI.
This event was developed in line with the principles of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (the Istanbul Convention). According to the Convention, it is the obligation of the state to fully address in all its forms and to take measures to prevent violence against women, protect its victims and prosecute the perpetrators.
A panel of national and international experts will focus on the low levels of prosecution for violence against women in Ireland and explore how victims of violence against women can be best supported in the prosecution process.
- Maria McDonald BL and Victims’ Rights Advocate
- Rebecca Coen, BL, Office of the DPP.
Our panel discussion will include:
- Emma Murphy, public speaker and domestic violence advocate
- Tom O'Malley, Senior Lecturer in Law at NUIG and a member of the Irish Law Reform Commission
- Margaret Martin, CEO of Women's Aid and Observatory member.
- A representative from the Garda National Protective Services Bureau
Conor Gallagher, Journalist with the Irish Times, will chair the panel.
This event is being supported by the European Parliament Office in Ireland and Dublin City Council.
