Ask Minister Shatter to reconsider 35% cut to NWCI budget
The National Women's Council of Ireland has been hit with a massive 35% cut to core funding in budget 2012. This attempt to silence the NWCI in this time of need must be reversed. We ask you to take action by asking Minister Shatter to reverse this draconian cut.
The government says it set out to be fair - in fact women and children will bear the brunt of this budget. Meanwhile, the voice representing women's groups in Ireland, the National Women's Council of Ireland, has had its funding slashed by 35%.
It appears from Minister Shatter's speech that the Women's Council is to be penalised because it raised substantial funds in order to broaden its effectiveness without unduly burdening the public purse. The core work of the organisation, such as supporting the implementation of the Womens' Strategy still relies upon funding the Women's Council gets from the Government through the Department of Justice.
The Women's Council has already sustained cuts and was expecting another one. This massive 35% cut however would appear to be an attempt to silence the Women's Council in this time of need.
We call on you, the general public, to voice your outrage over this cut to Minister Shatter and lend us your support.
