There is increasing evidence that the recession and austerity have hit women particularly badly. Yet, public discussions and proposed solutions to the recession are not informed by any type of gender analysis.
Highlighting the impact of the recession and austerity measures on women and calling for a recovery that puts women’s equality at its centre are a key part of NWCI’s work in this area. Making recommendations for a reversal in many of the decisions taken as a consequence of austerity are a key feature of NWCI policy submissions, such as the Pre Budget Submission. These provide a detailed analysis of vital areas for women’s equality that need to be protected or require urgent future investment in the Budget.
NWCI also organised a seminar in association with TASC on the topic of Women and the Recession – Bearing the Brunt? in October 2012.
