Regional Workshops: Why should we care about gender and health?

Published: Monday, January 26, 2015

National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) wants to hear voices and experiences of women and men including women and men who are transgender in accessing health services and get feedback on the HSE maternity services charter.

NWCI is holding a series of regional workshops with women and men across Ireland to hear and document their experiences of health and health services in Ireland from a gender perspective. We particularly wish to hear the views of women and men whose voices are largely absent from more mainstream discussions on health.

Gender inequalities have a powerful impact on the health and wellbeing of women and men and cut across other forms of inequality, for example, poverty, economic disadvantage, disability, age, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Gender inequalities affect how health service providers respond to women and men’s health and can influence assumptions made about the roles of women and men in society.

From these consultations NWCI will communicate outcomes and recommendations to relevant policy makers within the HSE and Department of Health. We will report your valuable feedback on the forthcoming maternity services charter and liaise with the HSE regarding the development and implementation of the charter.

NWCI will collate practical examples and testimonies from women and men in order to make the case for gender mainstreaming in health through the lived experiences of health service users.
