Thekla Talks: What Does She Know? Challenging Gender Bias, Discrimination

We are delighted to invite you to an event hosted by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform to mark International Women’s Day to take place at 6.30pm on 8 March 2021.

This will mark the launch of a quarterly foresight series named in honour of Thekla Beere, the first female Secretary General of a Government Department.  The seminars will consider key international and International themes relevant to the policy remit of the Department.

For this first session, with the UN denoting the theme of  IWD 2021 as 'Choose to Challenge' How can we challenge gender bias, discrimination and stereotyping?, we present to you “What Does She Know? Challenging Gender Bias, Discrimination and Stereotyping”.

Chaired by Ms. Áine Griffin, founder of The Civil Circle, we are thrilled to be joined by an exceptional panel, comprising:

Ms. Patricia Coleman, Assistant Secretary, Department of Public Expenditure and Reform;
Senator Eileen Flynn, Chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community
Ms. Razan Ibrahim, Syrian-Irish Journalist and Activist
Ms. Joanne O’Riordan, Activist and Sports Journalist

In addition, Dr. Anna Bryson, Senior Lecturer in the School of Law of Queens University, Belfast will deliver an overview of the life and works of Thekla Beere.

The event will be opened by Minister Michael McGrath and we will also have closing remarks from Acting Secretary General David Moloney. We are also grateful for the executive sponsorship of the series from Assistant Secretary Ronnie Downes.
