Women have a particular experience of mental ill health, and therefore specific mental health needs. In 1997 the Government acknowledged that mental health services do not meet women's needs.2 Women's mental health is affected by various factors relating to women's inequality and multiple discriminations in Irish society. In order to respond to women's experience and needs, mental health provision requires a gendered approach to both policy and service provision as recognized in the recent report by the Women's Health Council3 and borne out by the WHO's acknowledgement that gender is a determinant of mental health.
