NWCI welcomes the recommendation to legislate from the Expert Group on Abortion

Published: Monday, November 26, 2012

The NWCI today welcomes the long awaited publication of the report of the Expert Group on abortion and in particular the recommendation that legislation is the most appropriate way to give effect to the X case.

Orla O Connor, Director of NWCI said,

'The NWCI have been working on the issue of abortion for over three decades as mandated by our members and we welcome the recommendation to put access to abortion services on our statute books in cases of life threatening pregnancies including the risk of suicide.  This is what NWCI has been recommending for some time to ensure women in Ireland have access to affordable reproductive health services in their own country."

She continued,

'The NWCI launched a campaign at the beginning of November to call for legislation for the X case.  The response to our campaign has been overwhelming. So far over 68,000 emails have been sent by over 16,000 people to their political representatives calling for legislation. The NWCI would urge all TDs to support the Expert Group recommendation to introduce primary legislation and to ensure the swift passing of this legislation as a matter of great urgency. We cannot wait another year for legislation to be passed and placing more women's lives at risk."
