Irish Council for Civil Liberties - invite to Guard Our Rights Launch for reform of An Garda

ICCL invites you to join our Guard Our Rights campaign for human rights-based reform of An Garda Síochána – to be launched on 14 September at 11am in the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission offices.

ICCL believes that many civil society groups are calling for reforms to policing in Ireland which are in fact human rights-based reforms. We expect that the Commission on the Future of Policing (CFP) will recommend a framework that has many aspects in common with a human rights-based approach to policing. ICCL wants to ensure that, together, our voices are heard and responded to during the reform process which will follow the publication of the CFP report. We hope to enable a coordinated civil society response so that the CFP’s recommendations are actually implemented and human rights are put at the centre of policing in Ireland. At the Guard Our Rights campaign launch on 14 September we will publish a report by Alyson Kilpatrick BL, former Human Rights Advisor to the Northern Ireland Policing Board. Alyson’s detailed report discusses the lessons to be learned from the efforts to place human rights at the centre of the PSNI’s organisation and operations.
