NWCI Chairperson Ellen O’Malley Dunlop to step down for general election

Published: Tuesday, January 14, 2020

NWCI today announced Chairperson Ellen O’Malley Dunlop will step down, to allow her to run as a candidate for Fine Gael in Dublin South West in the general election. Sarah Benson, Deputy Chairperson will represent the role of Chair until a new election to the board at our Annual General Meeting in June 2020. This is in line with the non-party political nature of the organisation.

We in NWCI advocate and campaign for the representation of women in politics across the political spectrum and commend all who put themselves forward for this invaluable public leadership. We hope that the next General Election brings a greater gender balance to our Dáil and NWCI will have a nationwide public campaign to ensure that the inequalities experienced by women are central issues in the next General Election.

Orla O’Connor, Director of NWCI said

“We all in NWCI would like to take this opportunity to thank Ellen for her immense support and commitment to the organisation and to women’s equality in Ireland. She has been a dedicated and hard- working Chairperson, who contributed significantly to both the development and growth of NWCI as a leading social force for change in Ireland during her term, which began in June 2017. We wish her all the best in her new endeavour. We look forward to working with Sarah Benson as Acting Chairperson.”

Sarah Benson is currently CEO of NWCI’s member organisation, Women’s Aid.
