Ahead of International Women’s Day, we are gathering outside the Dáil to mobilise for properly paid, income-linked family leave — and for an affordable system of public early childhood education and care that leaves no family behind.

Ireland is an outlier in Europe when it comes to family leave pay. Across Europe, countries like Sweden, Germany, Portugal and Bulgaria provide far stronger, income-related supports for parents. Families in Ireland deserve better.

The first year of a child’s life is crucial. Parents should have a real choice to care for their baby without being pushed into financial stress. But without properly paid leave, that choice simply isn’t there for too many families.

Now is the time to act.
