Savita Halappanavar’s death highlights the need for immediate action on X

Published: Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Speaking at the Launch of the NWCI and HSE Report 'Equal but Different: A framework for integrating gender equality in Health Service Executive Policy, Planning and Service Delivery' today , Orla O'Connor, Director of the National Women's Council said:

'We are shocked and saddened about Savita Halappanavar's death and would like to express our sincere condolences to her husband and his family and friends.  Based on the reports in the media her death was horrific and needless and may have been prevented by terminating the pregnancy earlier.'

She continued:

'It is simply unacceptable that 20 years after the X Case ruling women and doctors are still waiting for the much needed legal clarity. Savita Halappanavar's death tragically highlights the urgent need for legislation giving effect to the constitutional right to abortion where the life of the mother is at risk. The NWCI calls on the government to take immediate action and legislate for X.'
