Launch of 16 Days Campaign: Clare
Friday, November 25, 2016
The Clare Local Area Network on Violence Against Women will be launching this year’s 16 Day Campaign of Activism Against Gender Based Violence. The theme chosen by the area network this year is 'Abuse is Everyone's Business'. This event is a free event and all members of the public and local agencies are encouraged and welcome to attend.
The Clare Local Area Network is delighted to announce that Sharon O'Halloran will be a guest speaker at the launch. Sharon is the CEO of SAFE Ireland. She has worked in the community and voluntary sector for over 20 years and has a wide knowledge and expertise in organisational change, leadership, social change and violence against women. As part of her work with SAFE Ireland she is exploring new ways of healing from trauma and ending intergenerational cycles of domestic violence. She applies learning from neuroscience, biodynamic psychology, organisational change and community organising to the development of new discourses on domestic and sexual violence.
Other speakers include Dr Máire Finn who has worked as a GP in Ennis for over 16 years. Originally from Co Wexford Dr Finn studied medicine in Galway where she developed a keen interest in women’s medicine and women’s health in general. Representatives of Clare Haven Services will also be in attendance and will speak about the services which they provide to women in Clare using statistical information relating to women who use their services.
There will be music and entertainment from Anne Rynne and Suara Community Singing Group and a light lunch will be provided.
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls. The campaign runs every year from the 25th of November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to the 10th of December (International Human Rights Day). It was initiated in 1991 by the first Women's Global Leadership Institute, held by the Centre for Women's Global Leadership (CWGL) at Rutgers University. Currently, more than 3,700 organizations from approximately 164 countries participate in the campaign annually.
