The Feminists Are Awake

… and they’re up late, having the craic.

#TFAA is an evening of performances featuring everything from storytelling to poetry to burlesque. Hosted by the brilliant Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh, all proceeds collected go to the Rape Crisis Network Ireland. There’s raffles, music, cakes and all attendees are welcome to BYOB.

Filmbase has managed to wrangle in fabulous feminist talent in from across a board of disciplines:

Introduction: Professor Roja Fazaeli, Lecturer in Islamic Civilisations
Roja Fazaeli is a writer and professor at Trinity College Dublin. She has published columns, papers and book chapters on the topics of Islam and gender, Islamic feminism and human rights. She has been involved in international projects with colleagues from the Department of Near Eastern Studies, Princeton University, from the Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter and from Emory University, where she is a global affiliate at the School of Law. She’s currently serving on the editorial board of the Journal for Religion and Human Rights and has previously served on the boards of the Association of Persianite Studies, Irish Refugee Council and UNIFEM Ireland.

Stand Up Comedy: Emily O’Callaghan
As well as being hilarious, Emily O'Callaghan has an impressive and very diverse CV. She’s a massage therapist, an event organiser, a journalist, a promoter and a photographer. She writes for broadsheet.ie, can be seen on set in full Garda gear as an extra in Red Rock and has performed her stand up in pubs all across Dublin.

Short Film: After
Funded by the Filmbase/RTÉ Short Film Award scheme, After is Directed by Sean F. Branigan, written by Amy De Bhrún and stars Amy, Emma Eliza Regan, and Paul Reid. Dan’s night is cut short when his new girlfriend Jenny suffers a traumatic attack. Dan faces an important decision that will define his very character and his future.

Musical Performance: Ann Scott
Over the course of four stunning and original albums, Ann Scott has been steadily establishing herself as one of the most courageous songwriters on the Irish scene.  Her latest studio offering, Venus to the Sky, comprises ten songs recorded over several instalments between Chicago’s Electrical Audio and Sun Studios in Dublin. Co-produced with Karl Odlum and featuring a heavyweight indie squad (Dave Hingerty, Kim Porcelli, Katherine Atkinson, Gemma Hayes and Katell Keineg), the album received favourable reviews and airplay in Irish and UK media. Venus to the Sky is available from band-camp, iTunes and select stores in Ireland. Twice nominated in the best female category for the Irish Meteor Awards, Ann Scott has carved her own niche as an independent and firebrand songwriter. Her debut album Poor Horse was voted into the Hotpress musicians’ poll of Ireland’s top 100 albums, while follow ups, We’re Smiling and Flo have received hearty critical acclaim and a growing number of converts, with Tony Clayton Lea including We’re Smiling in his 2011 novel of ‘101 Irish Albums You Must Hear Before You Die’.

Burlesque: Flaming Jade
Niamh Creely, AKA Flaming Jade, is a singer, aerialist and burlesquer who has performed in a variety of aerial circus shows since 2011. She founded her own circus company, Ether Productions, which she now co­-directs. They have had a series of successful circus theatre shows and love the creative freedom that circus theatre offers. Flaming Jade has picked up quite a few awards, including Best Comedy at the Dublin Burlesque Festival, Best Newcomer Runner Up at the Galway Burlesque Festival and Best Newcomer Runner Up at the Belfast Burlesque Festival 2015.

Audio/Visual Presentation: Stefano Galvino
Audio Visual Artist Stefano Galvino presents a 15-minute audio-visual piece celebrating women in film & music. Galvino has performed original work at venues across Ireland, including The Button Factory, The Tivoli Theatre, The Generator, The Church and Odessa Club, as well as having had work shown at The Sugar Club, Filmbase, the Cork Film Festival, Darklight Festival and the Jameson Dublin Film Festival.

Dramatic Performance: Idir Mna presents Mamie Cadden - Ireland's infamous backstreet abortionist from the 30's, 40's & 50's.
Idir Mna are currently developing a full theatre production of Mamie's story entitled 'Our Lady of Last Resort' to be staged in summer 2017. This monologue is performed by Hannah Carnegie and written by Sorcha Hegarty. Yvonne is a Producer, Director and Event Management specialist with many years’ experience. Idir Mná has had sell out runs of ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ by David Mamet, ‘Airswimming’ by Charolotte Jones, as well as individual readings at The Attic Studio and The New Theatre. Hannah Carnegie hails from Belfast and came to study at The Lir Academy. Born into a family of actors, Hannah started, at a young age working professionally in film and theatre alongside actors such Toby Stephens and Julie Walters. Recent stage credits include ‘Cecily’ in ‘The Importance of Being Earnest with Centre Stage Theatre Co (Belfast). The Mamie Cadden Story has been a long time in Hannah’s brain and she is delighted to be working with Yvonne Ussher of Idir Mna to bring it to the stage.

Musical Performance: Nuala Finnegan
Nuala Finnegan is a graduate of DCU and an Undergraduate Award winner for her essay - From One Heart To Another. She has a background in music and drama, and has worked in different capacities with Peter Sheridan, Horizon Theatre and Wet Paint Arts. Nuala has also contributed to the soundtracks for 3 Alan Gilsenan groundbreaking documentaries. Currently Nuala performs at 'open mic' nights around Dublin, and is a member of Dublin Writers Forum (DWF).

Stand Up Comedy: Edwin Sammon
Performing stand up for ten years now, Offaly native Edwin Sammon has established himself as one of the most popular comedians in the country. His unpredictable and immensely likeable style saw audiences award him the Tedfest Golden Toilet Duck in 2011 for best comedian and led to him supporting the likes of Jason Byrne, Fred Cooke and Ardal O'Hanlon on their nationwide tours. In 2013 he was part of the sold out nationwide "Lads Of Comedy" tour. Edwin has been gaining more fans in his role as Fr. Gabriel in RTÉ's popular sitcom "Bridget and Eamon" and as Co- Presenter on "Republic Of Telly"

Musical Performance:  Lynda Lucas
Lynda Lucas is a singer/songwriter from Dublin, who has been performing onstage from a very young age. In 1994 she began gigging as a solo artist, later joining Dublin Bluegrass band The Cherry Pickers in 2000.She has played many major venues including Vicar St. and has an impressive repertoire which includes her own songs, plus material from Hank Williams, Emy Lou Harris and The Carter Family. With velvety vocals that glide effortlessly from vulnerable to powerful, she has a penchant for Bluesy/ Country style melody lines, and is an accomplished guitarist.

Storytelling: Mary Kate O Flanagan
Mary Kate will deliver a specially-crafted 5-minute story on the theme of ‘Home’ – to tie in to our linked Conference: 1916; Home; 1916. Mary Kate is a working writer who has written six feature-length screenplays, all of which have been funded by The Irish Film Board and subsequently optioned, and are currently in development. She holds an MA in Screenwriting, has won pan-European awards for her screenwriting, is a published short story writer and Ireland’s Grand Slam Champion Storyteller at The Moth.

Rap/Hiphop & Spoken Word Performance: Temper-Mental MissElayneous

Temper-Mental MissElayneous is the psyche of social consciousness, the moral pinnacle of music, the revolution of rhyme, the heart, pumping feminine blood through Hiphop in Ireland. Her bodhrán beating, poetry slinging and lyric launching armours this sonic and theatrical venture. “…one of the country’s most exciting and provocative solo performers in any musical style.” – RTÉ. Expect hyper highs to lulling lows, intimate minutes, back and forth, tos and fros with Temper-Mental MissElayneous

Performance Poetry: Alvy Carragher
Alvy is an accomplished poet who just released her first collection Falling in Love with Broken Things with Salmon Poetry. She writes and illustrates the Award-Winning Blog ‘With All the Finesse of a Badger’, and has performed at Electric Picnic, Edinburgh Fringe Fest, RTÉ’s Arena and Cúirt International Literary Festival. Alvy has a first class honours in her MA in Writing from NUIG and has been published in The Irish Times, Poethead, The Boheymth, The Galway Review, Ofi Press Mexico, Bare Hands Poetry and many more.

Comedy Performance: Andréa Farrell
Andréa Farrell is a funny girl from Dublin. A bright spark in Irish comedy, she quickly made an impact as a finalist in the RTE New Comedy Awards, a TV showcase for promising comedians that spring boarded her onto a staple of Summer festival slots like the Vodafone Comedy Festival, Kilkenny Cats Laughs, Electric Picnic and the Edinburgh Comedy Festival. Andrea broke new ground recently taking a campervan around Ireland with her chums The Lads of Comedy. When she’s not opening for comedy heavyweights like Stewart Francis, Marc Maron or David O’Doherty, she’s doing regular slots at the International Comedy Club, where her laconic style and irreverent stage presence are a breath of fresh air to the Dublin audiences. Andréa also won Stellar Comedian of the Year 2015.

The purpose of 1916: Home: 2016 is to mark the 20th anniversary of the closing of the last Magdalene Laundry in Ireland, in the wake of the 1916 commemorations. While many fought for an idea of home in 1916, others were confined and silenced in homes such as the Laundries, Mother and Baby homes, industrial and reformatory schools, orphanages and related institutions.
