NWCI welcomes decision by the Sisters of Charity to remove their ownership from the St Vincent’s Healthcare Group

Published: Monday, May 29, 2017

NWCI has today welcomed the statement of the Sisters of the Charity to remove the order from the ownership and governance of the new Maternity Hospital and St Vincent’s Healthcare Group.

Orla O'Connor, Director, NWCI said,

"We welcome the decision by the Sisters of Charity. NWCI with all our members have rigorously campaigned for the removal of religious interests and for State ownership of our new national maternity hospital as its in the best interests of women and their health care needs. Women must be able to trust their maternity hospital and know that they will be treated in a compassionate and non-judgmental way.  This will be more important for our maternity hospitals in the future when abortion services will be provided in Ireland."

She continued,

"The decision by the Sisters of the Charity raises the very significant issue for the Government on how to separate church and state in the provision of high quality public services in Ireland."
