Battered women to tell their stories via e-mail

Victims of domestic violence - often too frightened to tell anyone about their suffering - are to get their own e-mail forum.

Victims of domestic violence - often too frightened to tell anyone about their suffering - are to get their own e-mail forum.

The first online chatroom linking abused women, allowing them to tell their stories and to seek advice from professionals, is to be set up jointly by the Commons All-Party Group on Domestic Violence and the Hansard Society.

The aim is to put together a report on the scale of domestic violence in Britain while enabling frightened women to share their experiences without being identified or being forced to talk about them face-to-face.

The scheme has the support of women's groups and the Government's women's unit, headed by ministers Baroness Jay and Tessa Jowell. It is expected to be launched in the spring. Margaret Moran, Chairwoman of the All-Party Group on Domestic Violence, said: "We have had a big response from outreach work with women's organisations and have more than 200 women lined up to go online.
