Language fluency the key to greater integration

Speaking at the launch of the document by the National Womens' Council of Ireland, 'Making Our Voices Heard; the Story of Muslim Women in Ireland', Deputy Joan Burton said that "The critical issue in respect of immigrants and immigrant communities in Ireland was how quickly they developed fluency in English so that they can be fully integrated into Irish society, particularly into education and employment."

"Without fluency in local languages, particularly English," she said, she found it "difficult to see how pupils in primary and secondary school could compete academically with their local peer group."

"Equally, fluency in academic English is also essential for success, not just at university level, but also at secondary and even at primary levels.

"Women who come from countries where there is a tradition of remaining within a household environment could be tempted to stay secluded, and not to engage with wider Irish society.
