Community Development - don’t cut the grass roots ACT NOW

The CWC and the National Community Development Forum are aware that that projects are to be asked to attend a seminar on June 10th at which they will be given directions on:

  1. How to assess the assets of the project (many of these assets were as result of communities fundraising and were accumulated with no State aid)
  2. How to assess a project liability
  3. How to transfer assets and liabilities from their project to the local Partnership Company
  4. How to wind down their companies.

With very little time left to bring pressure to bear to stop this policy direction, the CWC and the NCDF are urging you to join the Community Development - don't cut the grass roots campaign.

The campaign is asking Minister Carey to withdraw the requirement that projects funded under the Community Development Programme need to close, and allow them to:

  1. Engage in the Local and Community Development Programme on an equal footing with the Partnership Companies
  2. Retain their company structure
  3. Retain their assets (and liabilities)
  4. Retain their independence, autonomy and accountability

The campaign will include a number of elements.

1. A petition that we are asking you to sign and to encourage all communities, friends, family, colleagues and others that might be concerned or affected to sign also.
2. A letter outlining the same demands to be sent to Minister Carey and CCed to all members of the Oireachtas - this will be in email format (you will add your own details) and the email addresses for the members of the Oireachtas will be attached - all you will have to do is to copy and paste the email addresses into your 'To' box and send. We are asking you to encourage others to do this also and to send it every day from Thursday (May 27th) until June 9th. Don't forget to remove the attachment.
3. Meeting or phoning your local constituency politicians to lodge your concerns - again we are asking you to encourage others to do this also every day from Thursday (May 27th) until June 9th.
