Community Development Position in Cavan With the Irish Traveller Movement

The Irish Traveller Movement (ITM) is a national Traveller organisation that promotes the recognition of Travellers as a nomadic ethnic group in Irish society.

ITM is recruiting for the following position:

Community Development Worker for Co. Cavan. - Full time position

The primary objective of this post is to lead in the development of a Traveller Support Group in Co. Cavan to build their capacity to participate in the decision-making, planning, provision and delivery of appropriate services for their community. This will lead to positive outcomes for the Traveller Community and positively influence and enhance their health and social gain

The Core function of the post holder will be to directly engage with the Traveller community, building a relationship with them in order to support their participation to work in partnership with relevant statutory and non-statutory organisations and agencies in Co. Cavan

PRINCIPAL ROLE AND DUTIES

  • To lead in the development of a Traveller Support Group in Co. Cavan and to identify and assist with the group's development and training needs.
  • To support the group to identify and articulate the future development needs of the Traveller community.
  • To promote multi agency consultation and co-operation in these identified areas.
  • To work with service providers to support the development of culturally appropriate services for Travellers.
  • To develop a Three Year Action Plan for the group, based on identified needs, which would take a community development approach in partnership with the Traveller Interagency group.
  • To support long-term Traveller involvement on relevant local, regional and national forums, including the Traveller Interagency Committee.

Essential requirement for the post include:

  • Thorough knowledge of the issues affecting the Traveller community
  • At least 3 years experience of working in a community development context or related area
  • Demonstrate a commitment to equality and the principles of Community Development.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the local and national policy fora that affect the Traveller community, for example, the County Development Board etc.
  • Full Drivers Licence and own transport
  • Facilitation skills

A 3rd level qualification in Community Development or related area would be desirable.

Additional support/training will be available to the right candidates for above posts pursuant to Section 33 of the Employment Equality Act 1998 as amended by section 22 of the Equality Act, 2004.
