#ItStopsNow campaign to tackle sexual harassment and violence on campus

Published: Monday, October 22, 2018

NWCI has launched its #ItStopsNow campaign and video to tackle sexual violence and harassment on campus.

Campaign Coordinator Tara Brown said, “The ‘It Stops Now’ campaign emphasises that a broad cultural change is required to effectively tackle sexual violence and harassment. Students have the right to study and live in a safe and respectful environment. This campaign compels us all to consider and act on our shared responsibilities in building a culture of zero tolerance which prevents and combats sexual harassment and violence, both on and off campus”.

The campaign has developed through direct engagement with students in Ireland and across Europe in focus groups, development sessions and one-to-one meetings. It directly reflect the experiences of sexual violence and harassment faced by many young women in third-level education.

Students were not only involved in informing the campaign but also in creating the It Stops Now video. In early October, University College Dublin kindly hosted our #ItStopsNow campaign mural supported by the UCD Student Union, Consent at UCD society and student activists from other institutes. It had an immediate positive impact as students engaged with the mural, the messages on posters acting as a natural conversation starter with their peers.

This student campaign is part of an EU funded ESHTE project which tackles the issue of sexual violence and harassment in third-level education and will be rolled out in institutes across Ireland, Scotland, Cyprus and Lithuania.
