Published: Tuesday, September 14, 2010

The appointment of a long time champion of women's rights to the new post of United Nations Under Secretary for Women is good news for the world's women, according to the National Women's Council of Ireland. "Michelle Bachelet, formerly Chile's first woman president, has for many years shown a powerful commitment to equality for women, especially women experiencing poverty and violence," said chief executive, Susan McKay. "She will make a wonderful difference and will give women a strong voice in this important new position."

The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon has long been a champion for women within the structures of the UN. He created the new Under Secretary's position to bring together four previously separate entities, the UN development fund for women, the Division for the Advancement of Women, the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women and the Office of the Special Advisor to the Secretary General on Gender Issues.
