NWCI calls on the Government to establish Citizens Assembly on Care

Published: Thursday, December 06, 2018

The National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) today welcomed the report by the Joint Oireachtas Justice and Equality Committee on Art. 41.2. NWCI called on the Government to announce the establishment of a Citizens Assembly on care and commit to holding the referendum on the article in 2019.

Orla O’Connor, Director, NWCI, said,

“We welcome the report of the Committee and acknowledge the consideration the Committee has given to the issue of care and gender equality. We welcome that there is unanimity that the current wording is not acceptable and sexist.  However, the report clearly shows that the article evokes broad issues around care and its role and value in society. NWCI believes that a Citizens Assembly is the most appropriate form to allow for a broad public discussion on care, carers and those who receive care and the role of the Constitution in valuing care in all its forms. We call on the Government to establish a Citizens Assembly on care and commit to holding the referendum in 2019.”
