The Y Factor Needs a Volunteer to Support our Communications Work

The Y Factor Project, a youth initiative of the National Women's Council of Ireland is currently looking for a Volunteer to support our communications work as part of The Y Factor team.

The Y Factor is an initiative of the NWCI, which aims to support and empower young people as leaders and advocates for women's equality.  There are a number of key activities through which it does this: 

  • Developing and delivering education/discussion programmes in schools and youth projects (currently in a pilot phase)
  • Providing physical and virtual spaces for young people to exchange information, analysis and opinions on the issues that face them in relation to women's equality and to organise campaigns to respond to these issues
  • Collaborating with and supporting the work of other feminist groups and organisations of young people

We are looking for a dynamic and creative person or people interested in what The Y Factor is doing. Originally this advertisement sought a person able to commit to up to 18 hours per week for a period of at least 6 months. However, the Y Factor recognises the challenging and precarious work environment that young people are experiencing, and their need for flexibility to avail of and balance other opportunities and obligations.  If you are unable to make a commitment of 18 hours per week, please apply stating your hours of availability.  

Main responsibilities will include:

-          Supporting the development of our social media presence by searching articles, monitoring our Facebook page, tweeting information about our events etc.

-          Exploring other social media platforms and channels that could be used to communicate with Y Factor audiences

-          Monitoring news on issues of relevance to young people and women's equality

-          Collating and curating guest blogs for The Y Factor website, Facebook and in response to requests from other organisations

-          Updating The Y Factor's website

-          Supporting volunteer recruitment

-          Helping to generate ideas to promote youth engagement with The Y Factor

-          Participating in Y Factor and National Women's Council events and meetings  

-          Participating in regular supervision meetings

-          Performing other tasks as required.

We offer the opportunity to get to know the work of The Y Factor and of the National Women's Council of Ireland and to gain work experience in the area of communications and women's equality. We will provide regular support and training can be provided where required. Travel and out-of-pocket expenses can be reimbursed.

We are looking for a person with:

  • A keen interest in and understanding of women's rights and women's equality
  • A keen interest in youth activism and participation
  • Experience or proven interest in communications, in particular social media (Facebook, Twitter)
  • Relevant education
  • Excellent writing skills and analytical skills
  • Experience in updating websites
  • Eye for detail
