NWCI pays tribute to Sylvia Meehan

Published: Thursday, September 06, 2018

It is with great sadness that the National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) has learned today of the passing of women’s rights campaigner, Sylvia Meehan.

Orla O’Connor, Director of NWCI said,

“We offer our sincere condolences to Sylvia Meehan’s family at this time.

Born in 1929, Sylvia Meehan was a trailblazer for women’s equality. She campaigned tirelessly for the rights of women workers and older women. During her career, Sylvia Meehan chaired the Women’s Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and was the first Chief Executive of the Employment Equality Agency. Later she became President of the Irish Senior Citizens Parliament. Sylvia Meehan was closely involved with NWCI in our campaign for pension rights for women affected by the marriage bar.

Sylvia Meehan will be a great loss not only for her family but for the women’s movement in Ireland.”
