NWCI welcomes increased allocation of funding to women’s equality

Published: Tuesday, October 13, 2015

In response to Minister of Justice, Frances Fitzgerald’s speech on Budget 2016, Orla O’Connor, Director of the National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) said,

“We welcome the increased allocation of funding to NWCI which will go a significant way to restoring the cuts to our budget over recent years. At a time when there is an increased recognition of the need for greater gender equality and women’s participation in all policy areas,  this funding will strengthen our work to achieve greater equality between women and men in Ireland and ensure that women’s voices at all levels are being heard.”

Orla O’Connor continued,

“We also welcome the emphasis the Minister placed on the crime of domestic and sexual violence.  The additional resources to support victims of crime and to combat domestic violence are very positive in this Budget. Increases in resources to Gardai must include additional resources to ensure an effective response to domestic and sexual violence. These measures are crucial for Ireland to sign and ratify the Council of Europe Convention on Violence against Women (Istanbul Convention).”
