IHRC and TCD Joint Conference Education and Religion: A Human Rights Perspective

Date for Diary
9.00am-4.30pm, Saturday 27th November 2010

Trinity College Dublin

The Irish Human Rights Commission (IHRC) and the Faculty of Law, Trinity College Dublin (TCD) have the pleasure of inviting you to a significant day long conference examining the human rights implications of religion in education. The Conference will commence at 9.00am on Saturday 27th November 2010.
The IHRC, as Ireland's National Human Rights Institution, is well placed to facilitate a discussion on the human rights issues arising in the context of religion and education. The Faculty of Law, TCD, brings a unique legal perspective on both domestic and international jurisprudence.
The conference will thus examine the Irish education system, how religion is presently dealt with under that system and then turn to consider the human rights standards that apply. The day will comprise not only contributions from leading Irish and International academics, but also include contributions from the key actors and stakeholders in the education system along with speakers from the main religions in the State and speakers from a secular perspective. The conference will provide an opportunity for delegates to raise questions and join the discussion on this important topic.
To provide a framework for discussion to take place at the conference, and to inform the ongoing work of the IHRC, a discussion paper will be launched on the day posing some of the critical questions that may be asked in relation to how the State can meet its human rights obligations in relation to education in an ever more diverse society.
The conference on 27th November will examine relevant human rights standards and in this context provide a focus for discussion on how diverse religious and non-religious perspectives can be accommodated in the education system. Its deliberations will also inform the ongoing work of the IHRC on this important topic.
The full agenda of the conference will be circulated in late October. We hope to have the pleasure of your attendance on November 27th.
CPD Points will be awarded to attendees
