More than 55,000 emails to TDs calling for Legislation on X

Published: Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Over 55,000 emails were sent to TDs asking them to make legislation for X a government priority with over 45,000 being sent out yesterday alone.  The emails were sent by more than 13,000 people in Ireland who participated in National Women's Council of Ireland online campaign action 'Legislate for X'.

Orla O'Connor, Director of the National Women's Council of Ireland said:

'Twenty years after the X case people in Ireland are frustrated and angry that there is still no legislation. Savita Halappanavar's case tragically highlights the urgent need for legal clarity for women and healthcare professionals in Ireland.  The government must ensure that women's constitutional right to abortion where the life of the mother is at risk is finally being implemented into law. '

Jacqueline Healy, Coordinator of the Campaign 'Legislate for X' added:

'We launched the Campaign 'Legislate for X' on 2 November 2012 to give a voice to 80% of eligible voters in Ireland who favour abortion in certain circumstances according to a recent Sunday Times survey.'
