Launch of “Women doing politics differently” - developing local caucus with women councillors.
Thursday, March 04, 2021
The National Womens Council invites you to join us at our members and friends meeting.
We will launch the findings of research carried out in 2020 examining interest in local women's caucuses and what supports are necessary for their development. The research included a survey with women councillors, focus groups and one to one interviews with stakeholders.
Women continue to be seriously underrepresented in Local Government and make up just 25% of all councillors. Caucuses are one of the mechanisms that can support women's representation at local level.
Claire McGing - Gender and Politics researcher has carried out this research on behalf of NWC and will present the findings.
Peter Burke Minister of State for Local Government and Planning will respond to the findings.
Perry Aritua, Executive Director, Women's Democracy Network Uganda Chapter will share the experiences of facilitating the development of caucus in five districts in the West Nile region of Uganda.
This will then be followed by a wide-ranging panel discussion with Cllr Sarah Kiely, Cllr Darcy Lonergan, Cllr Cathy Bennett, Cllr Miriam Murphy, Cllr Uruemu Adejinmi and Edel Geraghty(Coordinator of NCCWN/Limerick Womens Network) sharing their experiences of how caucus can work in different local and regional contexts.
The webinar will be co- chaired by Orla O'Connor, Director, NWC and Louise Lovett, Chairperson, NWC.
The event is free. However, if you are in a position to contribute towards the costs, we would greatly appreciate a donation on our website. https://www.nwci.ie/donate/now.
